The "Taufach peat-bog" near Werdenstein is mentioned for the first time towards the end of the middle-ages. In a historical document dated 1785, the public right of peat usufruct was confirmed; all Werdenstein subjects were entitled to the use the peat on their fields and it was to be available to the parson and the manor for heating. The peat in Werdenstein was removed in huge quantities during the second half of the 19th century for the locomotives on the railway-line Kempten - Immenstadt - Lindau, opened in 1853..
